Can You Travel with CBD?

by | Nov 30, 2020 | CBD Education

When you travel somewhere, you always work to ensure that you have everything that you need. You try to make it so wherever you are going, you will be as comfortable as possible. For many, this means bringing along the things that help provide the most normalcy for them, such as hygienic products, prescription medications, and even some home comforts (depending on how long the trip will be). If you are someone who regularly uses CBD, though, you may be wondering — “can you travel with CBD?”

Can You Travel with CBD?

CBD is a vital component in the lives of countless Americans, as it can be used for several purposes. CBD oil can be used to help treat a wide range of conditions and related symptoms, such as chronic headaches, physical pain, anxiety, and depression. Some people have even weaned themselves off of prescription medications for mental and physical health problems and have incorporated CBD into their overall treatment plan. If you are someone who utilizes CBD often enough that you want to bring it along with you in your travels, it is imperative that you know if you can travel with CBD and how to do so if possible.

CBD and Planes

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that approximately 2.9 million people fly throughout the United States every single day. Of course, that number has dropped significantly since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, however that does not mean that there aren’t still people hopping on planes on a regular basis. Pandemic or not, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has strict rules regarding CBD and CBD-infused products on planes. According to the government website, the TSA states the following:

“Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA.”

Marijuana-based CBD contains trace amounts of THC. While the percentage found in this type of CBD is minimal and does not create any type of psychoactive effect, studies have shown that the small amount of THC in marijuana-based CBD makes the product more effective. Hemp-based CBD, however, usually has 0.3% THC or less in it. All THC can be removed from hemp, too, making it completely free and clear of the chemical. So when it comes to flying with CBD, you can take hemp-based CBD or you can bring along your regular CBD and have TSA determine if you can travel with it. However, if they say no, they can confiscate it. It is recommended to call the airport ahead of time to inquire about your CBD-related questions to save time and avoid confusion prior to your travel.

CBD Infused Gummies

This is one of the most effective ways to consume CBD and also one of the most popular. They are easy on the stomach, taste good, and can be a lifesaver for those who are undergoing medical treatments that impact their gastrointestinal system.

Traveling with CBD on Other Forms of Transportation

When traveling via boats, trains, or buses, rules are much stricter, however many people choose to still pack their CBD-based products because there are less security measures to go through when traveling through these means.

Amtrak, one of the country’s leaders in travel, prohibits the “use or transportation of” any marijuana product, including products containing CBD. Cruise ships also uphold similar standards, as they do not allow any type of CBD product, including hemp-based CBD that contains little to no THC at all. Disney Cruise Lines lumps CBD products into the category of “illegal narcotics/drugs including synthetic, designer drugs, and medically prescribed marijuana.

If you are looking to travel and wondering if you can bring your CBD, the best thing you can do is call the company that you will be traveling with. Make sure you know what is acceptable to bring and what is not, and include any limitations into your overall planning.
