CBD vs. Kratom: Which Works Best?

by | Dec 28, 2020 | CBD Education

CBD is one of the most popular alternative medications on the market for several different symptoms. Not only does CBD help minimize physical pain, but it can also help alleviate symptoms of mental illnesses like anxiety and depression, as well as protect the immune system and improve physical ability. It is widely available in shops throughout the country as edibles, gummies, oils, rubs, and lotions. CBD has become so popular because it is all-natural and has not yet been proven to cause any major health-related side effects.

Kratom, another alternative substance that people use for pain relief and lowering anxiety, is often compared to CBD. It is derived from the leaves of the kratom tree which grow in southeast Asian countries. Kratom has been used for thousands of years for its pain-relieving abilities since it can help manage pain when taken in high doses. When taken in smaller, more controlled doses, kratom has the effects of a stimulant. It is legal in the United States, however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has marked it as a substance of concern because of the impact it can have on users. Kratom may be banned in the US before it gains real traction in the future because of the minimal research into it and the list of side effects. Kratom can cause insomnia and weight problems, to name a few potential negative consequences of using it. It is also possible to overdose on kratom, which is not a concern with CBD.

CBD vs. Kratom: Which Works Best

While there is still a great deal of research that needs to be conducted on CBD, initial research and reports of user experiences so far have pointed to it being more beneficial than dangerous. In fact, CBD has not been proven to be dangerous in any way. No one has reportedly experienced a CBD overdose and only mild side effects are associated with CBD use, like drowsiness, dry mouth, and nausea. Kratom is not as simple to use as CBD, it can cause more extreme side effects and can lead to overdose. But, both alternative medications do have the potential to alleviate pain.

In regards to its ability to alleviate pain, kratom is more potent than CBD. Kratom contains nearly the same amount of alkaloids as opium and magic mushrooms do, meaning that has the potential to have a significant impact on the body. As a result, kratom is more likely to alleviate severe pain more effectively than CBD, however, using it is not always the safest option. The active compounds in kratom like mitragynine and 7-HMG interact with the natural opioid receptors in the body. While kratom is not actually considered an opiate, it can have similar side effects and there is a risk of addiction and withdrawal. Given this, it is not recommended that users consume an appropriate dose of kratom more than once every three days, otherwise, they may increase the body’s tolerance to the substance and make the risk of addiction much higher.

CBD vs Kratom: Methods of Consumption

CBD is much more widely approved since individuals can take as much as they need without fear of overdosing or becoming addicted. CBD is not as potent as kratom, but it can help alleviate pain just the same. It is also possible for CBD to treat a plethora of different conditions, ranging from anxiety to autoimmune disorders. Scientists and researchers have conducted much more research into the effects and benefits of CBD than kratom which can give hesitant consumers some more confidence about the CBD products they are buying.

Another difference between these two substances is the methods of consumption. People generally consume kratom by stirring the appropriate amount of the powder into a glass of water or other liquid and drinking it. It can also be taken as capsules or a tea, though these options are less common. With CBD, administering drops of oil under the tongue and holding them there for a minute or two to speed up absorption is the most popular method of consumption. If that isn’t to someone’s liking, they can also take CBD as gummies, other edibles, or topical creams and rubs.

Both CBD and kratom both appear to be effective in their own ways, so determining which works best is going to come down to personal opinion and the symptoms an individual is looking to alleviate. For example, someone who is experiencing anxiety as a result of opioid withdrawal may benefit more from kratom than CBD. However, someone who has generalized anxiety disorder may have more success using CBD than kratom. The good news is, there are options available to help treat many common conditions without using pharmacological resources.
