People are constantly looking for new, creative ways to get the most from their products, including their products containing CBD. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is known to offer several benefits including pain relief, improved sleep, improved appetite, reduction of symptoms associated with anxiety and depression, and even an increase in athletic agility. It is by far one of the most widely sought-after products on the market today.
For many people, it is important to spend time researching CBD and the way it works, in addition to the types of CBD products that are best for the condition they are looking to address. Many of those individuals find themselves learning about the differences between products and how they are sourced. Depending on how it is extracted and from which plant, CBD falls into one of three categories:
- Full-spectrum hemp extract (FSE) – Full-spectrum hemp extract contains all the chemicals that come from the hemp plant including trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC is the psychoactive element found in hemp and marijuana plants, however, the levels of THC in hemp are so minimal that it is not possible to get high.
- Broad-spectrum — Broad-spectrum products are almost completely the same as full-spectrum hemp extract products, only they do not contain any THC. The THC is sourced out of broad-spectrum products even if there are only small, non-harmful amounts of it present.
- CBD isolate — CBD isolate products are those products that contain CBD and absolutely nothing else.
This information is key when a person looks to determine which type of CBD product they want to take. Everyone has their own unique needs, meaning that some consumers may not want THC in their CBD, while others may want CBD and nothing else. Those who lean more towards full-spectrum hemp extract, however, can benefit from what is known as the entourage effect.

What is the Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect is a term used to describe the beneficial effects of a conglomerate of chemicals working in concert with one another via a full spectrum CBD product. The reason why the entourage effect is only possible with full spectrum products is that they do not have any of the naturally-occurring chemicals extracted from them. All the natural chemicals can work side-by-side. These chemicals include cannabinoids such as:
- Cannabidiol (CBD)
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)
Different strains of hemp and cannabis plants will contain various compounds like these in different amounts. If you’re especially interested in the entourage effect and how the compounds in these plants interact with each other, you can read about the plants your CBD products are sourced from and the methods the companies use to extract CBD.
Those who use full-spectrum products can benefit from the entourage effect as it is believed that when each of these cannabinoids is present at the same time within a product, the effects the product produces are significantly greater than those produced by broad-spectrum or CBD isolate products. Those consuming full spectrum products and achieving the entourage effect are not only going to benefit from the CBD, but also the other cannabinoids in the product. This is not possible to do with other products sourced differently, as they do not contain the same chemicals. Something to be aware of is that full-spectrum products will always contain some amount of THC, though at a very low level. For most people, this isn’t a problem and may even be positive, but people who have a sensitivity to THC or get drug tested frequently should be careful.
How Strong is the Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect is an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Any of the ingredients of full-spectrum CBD on their own, including pure CBD, would not produce as strong an effect alone as they do working together. There is still some debate among scientists about just how strong this effect is but many users do report significant differences between using just CBD and CBD products containing other natural ingredients. The entourage effect can also be produced by artificially introducing related compounds into CBD. Notably, terpenes and CBD can work together very well to increase the benefits that a user experiences.
You certainly don’t need to use full-spectrum CBD products if you don’t want to. The entourage effect is just something to consider when you choose which product is best for you. CBD seems to be most effective at providing certain benefits like relieving pain and reducing anxiety to users when it is combined with other natural phytochemicals in hemp including THC. The effects users feel will still only be as good as the CBD products they use, though, which is why it’s important to buy from retailers that use the highest-quality ingredients and do consistent testing for safety. Whether you take advantage of the entourage effect or not, don’t do yourself the disservice of buying inferior CBD products.
