For years, marijuana and hemp have been widely viewed as the same substance. The terms have been frequently interchanged, however hemp-derived CBD and marijuana-derived CBD are not the same at all.
What is Hemp?
Hemp is a variety of cannabis plant that has been used all over the world for several different purposes. For example, hemp is commonly used in the production of the following:
- Oil paints
- Soaps lotions
These are just some of the examples of how this multi-functional fiber is included into everyday products. Hemp is an ideal option for products such as these because it is a strong material that does not contain enough tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, to produce a psychoactive high.
What is Marijuana?
Marijuana, like hemp, is a type of cannabis plant. It contains more than 0.3% of THC, meaning that when it is used, it produces a psychoactive high. Marijuana is used by millions of people for its ability to not only produce a high, but also to help alleviate symptoms related to anxiety, sleep problems, and physical health complications. In some parts of the country, marijuana is legalized for recreational use, while in other parts of the country, possession of marijuana has been decriminalized but the use of it is still illegal.
Marijuana is most commonly smoked, but can be added to foods, too. As more research has been conducted, studies continue to show the massive amount of benefits that marijuana can produce for those who use it responsibly. It still remains an addictive substance, and while it does not usually cause severe addiction, it has long been considered a gateway to the use of other, harder drugs.

What is the Difference Between Hemp-Derived CBD and Marijuana-Derived CBD?
The primary difference between hemp-derived CBD and marijuna-derived CBD is that the CBD comes from two different plants. As mentioned before, hemp and marijuana both considered cannabis plants. Hemp is known as cannabis sativa and marijuana as cannabis indica. So while they are technically different types of the same plant, they both contain CBD. CBD is CBD, regardless of if it is derived from hemp or marijuana.
Some of the most notable differences between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana-dervied CBD include the following:
- There is more resin found in the marijuana plant than in the hemp plant, meaning that it is easier to source CBD from the marijuana plant
- Hemp is not as regulated as marijuana is, meaning that there is a higher chance of hemp having more contaminants which can impact the quality of its CBD
- Components of CBD that are derived from hemp (such as THC) can be extracted completely
- Studies show that the richer the CBD, the more effective it can be for several purposes
