How Long Does CBD Take to Work?

by | Nov 18, 2020 | CBD Education

One of the greatest benefits of CBD is that it starts to take effect fairly quickly, regardless of how the user administers it. Many medications require time to build in the system, meaning that a person may not feel the effects for a few days (or sometimes a few weeks). That can be a long time for people to wait for relief when they’re suffering from uncomfortable or even painful symptoms. Thankfully, though, CBD starts working within minutes to hours after initial consumption. It is important to note that the method of consumption impacts how soon a person will start to feel the effects of the CBD. This is just one of many factors that determine the speed of results. Other factors outside of the method of consumption that influence how long it takes CBD to work depend on the following:

  • Potency of CBD
  • Dosage consumed
  • Quality of CBD
  • Type of CBD

It is common for people who have never used CBD oil before to experience effects faster and in lower doses. As the body gets used to CBD and builds a tolerance, it can be more difficult to feel these effects. To remedy this, users can increase the dose of CBD they use or take a few days off from using it.

Instant Absorption. Rapid Uptake.

Inhaling vaporized Hemp Derived CBD is the fastest, most efficient way to get its full benefits into your bloodstream and throughout your body.

How Long Does CBD Take to Work?

There are four main methods of CBD use: topically, orally, sublingually, and through inhalation. If you want to get the fastest results, inhaling CBD, such as through vaping, is the best option. Through this method, the CBD makes its way into the bloodstream through the lungs. The process occurs within minutes. If CBD is administered sublingually, meaning under the tongue, effects will begin working within minutes, too, however not as quickly as through CBD inhalation. Sublingually consumed CBD is absorbed through the tissues in the mouth and then enters into the bloodstream. Both inhaling CBD and consuming it sublingually will produce quick results because of how the body absorbs it, so choosing between them comes down to little more than the user’s personal preferences.

Taking CBD orally (such as through gummies or other edibles) or applying it topically are the slowest ways to administer this supplement. One of the reasons for this is that topical CBD needs to be absorbed into the skin to start working but it cannot penetrate through the skin’s water barrier. This makes it the least effective method and takes the longest time to experience effects. When CBD is consumed orally, it needs to go through the digestive system in order to make it into the bloodstream. This can take a few hours with most edibles but some manufacturers include MCT into their CBD edibles for quicker digestion and quicker results.

As mentioned earlier, it takes a few hours at most to feel the effects of CBD. However, if a person consumes more CBD at a time, these effects can kick in much sooner. A major part of incorporating CBD into one’s lifestyle is experimenting with it — what doses work best, what time of day to take it, etc. Through this experimentation, you can begin learning how long it takes for CBD to work in your body. If you are only starting with CBD, don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work immediately or if you don’t get the results you expect. Try out different methods of ingestion or application based on the related guidelines and have some patience. It can take a week or longer for enough CBD to build up in your system but it won’t be long until you see some results and it will be worth the wait!

And as with most medications and supplements, who you are will change how quickly you feel the results. That is to say that things like your body mass index, your metabolism, how much food you eat and when, and your water content will all affect your reaction to CBD, regardless of which method you use to administer it. This is just all the more reason to take your time trying out CBD products until you find what works for you since there is no one size fits all advice when it comes to using CBD.

Remember that the relevant factors to how long CBD takes to kick in also include the quality of the CBD. While it may be tempting to choose the least expensive products, it’s generally worthwhile to invest in high-quality (and thus slightly more expensive) CBD products if you want to feel the effects quickly and safely. You can get a better idea of which products and brands to buy by taking the time to read potency labels and ingredient lists. Don’t settle for less when it comes to the medications and supplements you put in your body.
