How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

by | Dec 1, 2020 | CBD Applications

Including CBD oil in your lifestyle can have several benefits, but only if you ensure that you are using it correctly. One of the most common challenges people have with CBD oil is determining how small or large their dose should be. Most CBD sellers will recommend experimenting with the amount that you take at first to see what works and what doesn’t. But for some people, that experimentation can sometimes fail in yielding significant results. For example, they may wait too long in between doses, don’t take enough at one time, and so on. Therefore, there should be an easy method to use to find out how much CBD oil you should take, eliminating the guesswork.

What Factors Determine How Much CBD Oil You Should Take?

To help figure out what dose is appropriate for you, there are some factors to consider, including the following:

  • Your height and weight
  • Your age and gender
  • Your tolerance to CBD
  • Your specific body chemistry
  • The severity of the condition you are using CBD to treat
  • The potency of the CBD product you want to take

As with any other type of medication, more of the substance is needed to create an effect in someone of larger size and/or who has a severe mental or physical health condition they are trying to treat. The general rule of thumb for those who are just starting to use CBD is to take 2-5mg per dose until the user feels the effects of the CBD. If you consume CBD oil orally by putting some drops under your tongue, you can expect to feel the effects of that dose within as little as an hour. If you vape it, it will only take about 5-10 minutes.

If, after those time frames, you are still not feeling any effects, take another dose of the same size. Repeat this process until you get relief from your symptoms. Since CBD oil does not contain enough THC to produce a mind-altering high, it is safe to take it as many times a day as you need. In fact, the largest amount of CBD oil that is safe to consume in one day is 1,500mg, which is typically nowhere near what the average consumer requires within 24 hours. You don’t have to worry about becoming addicted either, since CBD is non-habit forming.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

If you want to get a headstart on figuring out what your specific dose of CBD oil should be, consider the following recommendations based on weight:

  • 100 lbs — 10-60mg
  • 125 lbs — 13-75mg
  • 150 lbs — 15-90mg
  • 175 lbs — 17-105mg
  • 200 lbs — 20-120mg
  • 225 lbs — 22-135mg
  • 250 lbs — 25-150mg

The more severe the condition is that you are trying to treat, the higher your dose of CBD should be. If you have mild symptoms, taking a smaller dose should be enough. Treating moderate symptoms warrants taking a dose that is in between the lowest and highest dose options. These are just guidelines that you can use as a starting point. If you want to feel the effects of CBD generally throughout the day, you can take smaller doses more frequently. If, on the other hand, you have very specific symptoms you use CBD to help with, your best option may be to take larger doses of CBD only when those symptoms are acting up. The effects will last between 2 to 6 hours in general, so this is something else to consider.

Because everybody is different, there is no specific dose that will be 100% certain to work for you. Using this guide can help give you a ballpark, but a good majority of figuring out your dose will come from experimentation. Luckily, trying to nail down the right dose for you usually doesn’t take long, allowing for you to begin benefitting from CBD as quickly as possible.

The dose you determine is right for you may change over time. Because our bodies can build a tolerance to certain substances we consume including CBD, you may need to increase your dose sometime down the line if you are no longer feeling the effects of using CBD the same way you used to. This is nothing to be concerned about, though, because, as mentioned earlier, you can safely consume very large doses of CBD without worrying about overdosing or becoming addicted.

If you are already taking other medications for your symptoms or even for unrelated medical problems, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before starting with CBD. Unfortunately, CBD can have unwanted negative interactions with certain medications such as antidepressants and blood thinners. Just to be safe, take the time to consult a medical professional before beginning your CBD doses if you take these or other prescription medications.
