What are Terpenes and How Are They Beneficial?

by | Nov 27, 2020 | CBD Education

Continued research into CBD and its benefits has provided greater insight into just how effective the substance can be. One of the most notable aspects of CBD is that it contains terpenes, which are naturally-occurring compounds found in cannabis plants. Terpenes have been proven to be extremely beneficial for those who consume CBD containing one or more of them.

So, what are terpenes? As mentioned earlier, these are aromatic compounds found in cannabis plants. These compounds can be found in countless different types of plants like lemongrass and lavender. They are commonly used in essential oils and cleaning products to produce the pleasant smells associated with them. Cannabis plants have some of the highest concentrations of them. They are valuable to the plants that contain them, sometimes acting as attracting agents for pollinators and others repelling predators like animals and insects. The recognizable scent of the cannabis plant comes from the terpenes it contains.

For people, not only do terpenes give off healing aromas, but they also provide many other therapeutic physical and psychological benefits. Terpenes alone can affect the endocannabinoid system in the body, much like cannabinoids such as CBD do. There are more than 100 different terpenes in the cannabis plant but only a handful of them are highly concentrated. The five most common terpenes in the cannabis plant are pinene, caryophyllene, myrcene, linalool, and limonene, all of which provide different benefits to the user.

Types of Terpenes

  • Bisabolol
  • Borneol
  • Camphene
  • Caryophyllene
  • Delta 3 Carene
  • Eucalyptol
  • Geraniol
  • Humulene
  • Limonene
  • Linalool
  • Myrcene
  • Pinene
  • Phytol
  • Terpinolene
  • Trans-nerolidol
  • Valencene

These and other terpenes can be found in cannabis as well as in CBD products. They do not possess any psychoactive properties, meaning that people can use them for their many benefits without worrying about creating a mind-altering, addicting high.

Terpenes are incredibly common and legal everywhere. Even in an isolated form, terpenes shouldn’t give you any issues so long as they are manufactured appropriately. In the US, hemp products are legal to buy, transport, and produce, so hemp-derived terpenes are completely fine.

Benefits of Terpenes

An intriguing aspect about terpenes is that they all provide their own healing benefits in addition to the general benefits of CBD. Whether mental or physical, the benefits of terpenes can significantly improve a person’s wellbeing when consumed in products deemed medical or non-psychoactive. Some of the most prominent benefits of various terpenes include the following:

  • Offers physical pain relief and an all-natural option for continued pain management
  • Improves symptoms related to insomnia
  • Reduces heartburn and acid reflux
  • Helps treat symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression
  • Works as an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory
  • Helps improve breathing in individuals with conditions such as asthma
  • Improves memory
  • Promotes alertness
  • Can aid in treating cancerous tumors
  • Serves as a decongestant
  • Has antioxidant qualities

These benefits are associated with the types of terpenes listed above. Certain terpenes produce specific effects, which is why being educated about them can be critical in helping you take good care of yourself.

Myrcene, for example, is a powerful antioxidant that may also have an anti-inflammatory effect. It’s the most prominent of all the terpenes in Cannabis sativa but can also be found in sage, caraway, and clover. Linalool offers a range of potential benefits from properties that include being antimicrobial, antidepressant, and anti-anxiety. The calming effect that many people feel from smelling lavender comes from linalool. Pinene can help with breathing since it functions as a bronchodilator, something which allows more air to enter the lungs. It can be soothing and improve a person’s psyche. Limonene has anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and antiviral properties that make it a very attractive choice for including in your daily routine. Beta-caryophyllene can reduce nerve pain and pain related to inflammation through its anti-inflammatory properties. As you can see, each terpene has its own unique benefits that it offers users.

Terpenes and CBD

While these occur naturally in cannabis plants, they need to be added to CBD products. This allows consumers the opportunity to utilize these properties that will work best according to their needs. For example, someone who is struggling to sleep at night may benefit from a CBD product containing linalool or myrcene, while someone who needs to sharpen their alertness can benefit from a CBD product containing pinene. Depending on your own specific needs, you can utilize the terpenes in CBD to your benefit.

Terpenes interact with the endocannabinoid system in the body to increase the effects. They can work in synergy with CBD, for example, to help the user experience even greater benefits. This is known as the entourage effect and it makes CBD products containing terpenes particularly attractive options among medicinal products.
